Here we go again. Another comparison of a city with abandoned buildings to the Lebanese capital:
Charles Callahan moved to Lighthouse Court from Staten Island about 16 years ago, when that part of Gardner’s Basin was also surrounded by empty and decrepit buildings.
“It looked like Beirut,” he said. “If you would have told me before that I would be living in Atlantic City after I retired I would have said, ‘Uh oh, I must have lost all my money or something.’ There was this perception that it’s a nice place to visit, but don’t walk two blocks in the wrong direction.”
It annoys me too.
Last year, I think in the space of one month, I happened to watch several American and British TV shows that each made a negative reference to Beirut.
It shocks me that 20 years after the civil war ended, and despite our reconstruction, they still make these outdated jokes. Are the scripts written in Israel? 😛
It is quite sad. The only thing we can do is try to change that mindset.
