As MEA pilots hit the ground protesting, ground crew employed by the airline should take heed of this press release issued last week:
[French firm] IER has been awarded by Middle East Airlines – MEA, the supply self-check-in platforms to be deployed in the three coming months at Beirut Rafic Hariri International Airport.
With the self-check-in kiosks coming online, how many frowned-face ground crew does Middle East Airlines need on their payroll? Maybe then, they can give their pilots:
….42 days of holiday instead of 30….no “upper ceilings” on salaries….starting salaries between $5,000-$7,000 per month….
Update – July 3, 2010: Blog Baladi has confirmed that the kiosks have been installed; though there are questions whether they actually work properly.
I DOUBT, it’ll have that much of an effort when jiddo and teta are travelling to Venezuela to see their daughter and our Gulf tourists are exiting!!
Maybe the frequent flyers and business people will enjoy the idea that with online check in and now self check in, it’ll take an hour max to get on the plane and reduce the time you’d need to be at the airport earlier and then have nothing to do there!

Even in Montreal the self service check-in is still not picking up. But this is a good start, and hopefully later they will implement the mobile check-in.

True, I don’t see it used much here in Dubai either but it would be great to have an alternative to waiting in line as the people in front of you argue over excess baggage. And as Tarek has said, more likely an option for computer-apt users rather than “jiddo and teta”.
