A line between Alaboudyeh on Lebanon’s border was dismantled, but studies are now under way to redevelop the line from Alakari station in Syria to the Lebanese city of Tripoli.
Although Syrian Railways had been authorised to build in Lebanese territory this project has since been delayed due to lack of financing from the Lebanese side.
This forms part of Syria’s US$ 1 billion rail expansion project as highlighted by MEED magazine last week.
As the map shows, two additional lines will be constructed to lead to Beirut. The plan also involves Syria upgrading their current rail network to handle high-speed trains.

This is interesting news. We should rehabilitate the Lebanese rail network too. Weren’t there talks about this recently?

Well, there were discussions between PM Hariri and the French Ambassador with France throwing money at some railway project north of Beirut. The headlines looked great: France to fund Lebanon on rehabilitating coastal railways
But the content of the articles showed it was another project that will never get off the tracks:
Too many if’s to be considered anything serious.
