Illusionist Moein Al Bastaki says his craft has been shunned by media in his home country and is hoping a “more open-minded society” would accommodate his tricks:
A daredevil escapologist eager to bust his way out of a makeshift grave has vowed to take his stunt overseas and defy his doubters after being shunned by UAE TV channels.
Infamous illusionist Moein Al Bastaki, who has become well-known for his wizardry on Arabic television, says local producers panned his plans to be submerged in a sand-filled tank and branded it culturally insensitive.
“Being buried alive is the next step for me, it is a big challenge and I will do it. But here, the channels are not interested. Many people in the UAE think it is wrong, they think it is alluding to putting yourself in a grave and dying and coming back to life. People don’t agree with it. They think it is too risky and controversial. So I am approaching channels abroad, maybe Lebanon – they are more open minded.”
It would be interesting to see if any Lebanese channels do pick-up the act.
