Glasgow, Scotland

I have to hang my head low as this is probably one of the few times where the phrase “looks like Beirut” is actually accurate:

STREETS in the East End of Glasgow have so many potholes they look like they belong in Beirut, say residents.

The roads in Carntyne are so bad that some local people and taxi drivers refuse to take their vehicles along them.

Locals also say the deteriorating condition of the roads is costing drivers living in Inverleith Street and Murrayfield Street hundreds of pounds in repairs every year.

Joseph Toner, 57, has lived all his life in Inverleith Street and says the potholes have become a problem in the past four years.

He said: “This is the worst I have seen it and it is down to all these cuts and shoddy workmanship.

“It is like Beirut here.”

Of course, there is one big difference between Scotland and Lebanon when it comes to potholes, and that is who pays for damages.

In Lebanon:

I know already two people who had to buy a new tyre and alloy wheels after falling into [the pothole on the maritime road].

In Scotland:

Over the past four years, claims on vehicles damaged by potholes have shot up by more than 800%. In the last five years Glasgow City Council has paid out more than £335,000 in compensation for damaged vehicles.

Now that would be something.
