Those are the words of now de-throned, ex-Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak in a conversation with an Israeli Knesset member on January 29:
Benjamin Ben Eliezer, a Knesset member, told Israel’s Channel 10 that he recently spoke with Mubarak, who told him that “this is not Beirut and not Tunis” and suggested that Egyptian authorities had prepared the army in advance.
Little did he know that he would be eating those words in a few days. More of an insult to Egyptians rather than to Beirut or Tunis, and their ability to overthrow governments. Nevertheless, Mubarak definitely needs a “Looks Like Beirut” certificate. Does anyone know where he’s currently staying? I hear that Jeddah is nice this time of the year.
He’s supposedly in Sharm El Cheikh. Basking in the sun and sipping pina coladas probably. Not exactly fit for a dethroned dictator..
Nice – easy access to Jeddah!
LOL! You must send him a certificate. Indeed, he is supposed to be in Sharm, which is conveniently half-way between Cairo and Jeddah. This said, there is a lot of speculation that he will end up in the UAE, since the UAE sent their foreign minister to see him a couple of days before he resigned. With any luck, you might even have a chance to hand-deliver this one!
In my neighborhood! Wouldn’t it be great to deliver the certificate to him personally? I wonder if he’ll allow me to take photos as he opens the envelope.
